Uganda’s vibrant youth, comprising 70% of the total population, represents a significant demographic with immense economic and social development potential. This young generation, known for their cultural strength, friendliness, religious orientation, and social cohesion, possesses the necessary attributes to become meaningful citizens and drive the nation’s progress.

Academically and professionally, the Ugandan youth are well-equipped, with a strong desire for growth and the ambition to excel. This is evident in their business-oriented mindset and the urge to continuously improve themselves. The current generation of Ugandan youth is widely recognized for their exemplary behaviour, hospitality, knowledge, and respect, which has contributed to their success in various parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East, where they are highly sought after for their hard-working nature, adaptability, and adherence to moral values.

However, the same youth thriving globally often struggle within their own country. Back home, some Ugandan youth exhibit a more laid-back attitude, a lack of self-drive, and a tendency to seek more accessible ways to make money, which can trap them in the cycle of poverty. Their focus is sometimes diverted to unproductive activities, such as betting and excessive social media engagement, rather than channelling their energy into more constructive pursuits.

The disappointing aspect is a lack of a proper savings culture, even among the few Ugandan youth employed or engaged in investments. They often live beyond their means, spending on unnecessary items, hindering their long-term financial stability and growth. This mindset must be addressed to ensure a brighter future both for an individual, family and the nation. It is intriguing to note the contrast between the exemplary customer service and hospitality that Ugandan youth exhibit in other countries and their own country, where they sometimes expect to be served rather than taking an active role.

This observation highlights the need for Ugandan youth to rise above their comfort zones and seize the opportunities presented to them, both at home and abroad.
